Flying Carpet Festival
First mobile festival for children living conflict zones
The Philosophy
At its core, the Flying Carpet Festival is built on the belief that art is not merely a luxury for the privileged, but a fundamental necessity for the human spirit—especially for those living in the shadow of conflict. The festival operates on the philosophy that beauty, music, and imagination act as powerful forms of spiritual healing, capable of restoring a sense of childhood to those who have been forced to grow up too fast. By prioritizing "harmony through music, light, and truth," the project challenges the traditional hierarchy of needs, asserting that while food and shelter sustain the body, it is creative expression and shared joy that sustain the soul. The goal is to create a sanctuary of wonder, proving that even in the most fragile geopolitical landscapes, humanity can be bridged through the universal language of art.
What It Is
Practically, the festival is a volunteer-led, mobile arts event and residency that takes place annually near the Turkish-Syrian border. It brings together a collective of world-class international artists—ranging from classical musicians and circus performers to designers and visionaries—to collaborate directly with vulnerable local and refugee children. Far from a passive series of concerts, it is an immersive educational platform where artists and children co-create workshops and performances. Acting as a literal and metaphorical "flying carpet," the festival travels to remote villages and towns, transforming public spaces into stages and providing a rare opportunity for cross-cultural connection, learning, and radical joy in a region where such opportunities are often scarce.
