Preview: SHAMS

“…My home has no place, no sign, no trace,
I am neither in body nor soul,
nor anywhere other than my love’s life and soul.
If ever I spent a moment without you, I’d repent it the rest of my life.”
– Rumi

Verdigris Ensemble returns to the stage with the WORLD PREMIERE production of SHAMS, translated by Zara Houshmand, set to music by Award-Winning Sahba Aminikia, and visualized through live art by SilkRoad Ensemble member Kevork Mourad. The largest collection of Rumi poetry set to music in its original Farsi, SHAMS is a love story that explores the intricacies of understanding and acceptance. Adapted from multiple Rumi writings, SHAMS tells the story of Rumi’s relationship with his mentor, Shams Tabrizi, who in his own words was instrumental in Rumi’s complete philosophical shift in just 40 days together. This exciting world premiere is brought to life through live painting by artist Kevork Mourad, most recently known for his collaborations with Carnegie Hall, L.A. Philharmonic, and Spoleto Festival USA.
